Just last month TV Queen Shonda Rhimes gifted us all with fresh photos of the hit period drama’s sophomore season. Watch the new 'Bridgerton' season 2 trailer:

Behold! The best news we've had to date! The official trailer for season two is finally here and it does not disappoint! Feast your eyes...

As the camera pans over Regency London, we hear that familiar voice of Julie Andrews, the incognito voice of Lady Whistledown, as she says: "Dearest gentle readers...did you miss me?" Did we ever!

We're then treated to flashes of the characters reading what appears to be the first Whistledown column of the season and see the new Sharma family make their entrance. We also spy a chilly exchange between Anthony Bridgerton and his love interest Kate Sharma, not to mention a montage of guns firing, dancing, and a corgi!

The familiar music then crescendos, and we see, at last, Penelope Featherington Aka Lady Whistledown penning her latest gossip-filled article. "Lady Whistledown's words carry far too much import. We must entrap the scribbler!" the queen proclaims.

When does 'Bridgerton' season 2 come out?

Mark your calendars: Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton season 2 will be released on Friday, March 25, 2022.

The announcement dropped on Christmas Day 2021 as an anniversary present from Lady Whistledown herself to all Bridgerton fans (the show dropped on Netflix on Christmas Day 2020!) and features the cast announcing the exciting news.

"Dear readers, I know my absence has only made your hearts grow fonder; however, you will not have to wait much longer. Bridgerton Season 2 debuts March 25, 2022, only on Netflix", the tweet reads.

Despite the Netflix series starting filming in spring 2021, the show faced several COVID-related delays, but it officially wrapped in November 2021. Taking to Instagram, the show's producer, Chris Van Dusen shared the news along with a cute snap with Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton) and Simone Ashley (Kate Sharma).

In the caption, he wrote: "And that’s an official wrap on Season Two! I am so proud of this cast and crew who all brought their A-games to work each and every day in this very challenging year. I cannot wait for the world to see what we have in store for them. And these two in this photo with me right here. Words are not enough. We’ll be coming in 2022."

What's the plot of 'Bridgerton' season 2 ?

As far as the plot goes, the books give us a good indication of what's in store for us in season two, and thankfully, Penelope Featherington herself, a.k.a. Nicola Coughlan, was in a chatty mood and divulged some fresh intel on the Netflix smash hit.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight in September 2021, Coughlan said the sophomore season is based on The Viscount Who Loved Me, the "fan favorite" of the Bridgerton books. The novel focuses on the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony, and his quest to find a wife.

"When you do season 1, you don't know if you're gonna get a season 2, but we were like, 'I really hope we get a chance to tell that story because people love it so much.' And Kate is such a fiery character," Coughlin said of Kate Sharma, Anthony's love interest.

Who is Kate, Bridgerton's new leading lady? The role is played by Simone Ashley of Sex Education. Calling the Sharma family "stunning," Coughlan added that the chemistry between Kate and Anthony is "quite major".

While viewers can expect plenty of romance in season two, the actress clarified that her character Penelope might not be involved in much of the lovey-dovey drama this season. "There is a book dedicated to Penelope so it will get there," she said, referring to book four of the Bridgerton series, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton. "Currently, she's still a wallflower. She's a working lady. She's an independent woman in Regency London, so she's doing a lot."

After bouts of COVID plagued production in August 2021, things got back up and running fairly quickly. Netflix even gave fans its first sneak peek of season 2 just several weeks after the production issues. Following the Netflix Tudum event, we were treated to a small glimpse of Anthony's hunt for a leading lady.

We also got production images via Instagram. "Ask for more, and you shall receive, dear readers," a post's caption read. "Do enjoy an early view of what is to come this social season..."

"Sharma family is perfect ❤️" one user commented.

Most of the commenters are particularly excited about the Kathony pairing, and we cannot blame them!

Penelope and Eloise's friendship could be shaken in 'Bridgerton' season 2

Whilst Bridgerton season 2 is set to focus upon Anthony Bridgerton’s journey to find himself a suitable bride after his sister Daphne’s success with the Duke of Hastings in season 1, fan-favorites Eloise Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington will still be getting their fair share of air-time.

The best friends were close throughout the first season, despite complications posed by Eloise’s deep dive into trying to discover who Lady Whistledown is and Penelope’s unrequited (sob!) love for a certain Colin Bridgerton.

Now in an intriguing new interview with EW, Penelope and Eloise AKA Nicola Coughlin and Claudia Jessie and producer Chris Van Dusen have talked all things Bridgerton season 2. And unfortunately for fans, that could include some strains within Peneloise’s on-screen friendship…

"The main theme of season 2 is head versus heart," Chris tantalisingly revealed. "It's true for Anthony and Kate, and it's also true for Penelope. Her heart is with Lady Whistledown, but even she has to wonder if being London's most notorious gossip writer is the wisest thing."

Especially with someone like the relentless Eloise on her case, as Claudia described the character’s friendship as feeling like “the most uncomplicated love that there was” in the period drama.

"But they're getting older, and they each have secrets. It will shake them both,” she added, referencing the way that trust isn't what it once was between them.

Giving her own take on the whole Peneloise situation, Nicola reportedly suggested that Penelope was inspired by Eloise to create the huge secret of Lady Whistledown in the first place. Just like Eloise, the columnist is someone who rejects the norms associated with being a lady and is an independent force.

Penelope’s betrayal of Eloise’s trust, though, might just be unforgivable for this very reason. Nicola explained, “It would be so frustrating for Eloise to know Penelope's doing all the things she wants to do, and has a voice and power and can change things."

She continued, "But Penelope thinks Eloise is the funniest, smartest, best person in the world—and a lot of Whistledown is to impress her. Maybe I'm putting rose-tinted glasses on, but it all comes from a place of love."

Though Penelope isn’t exactly blameless, her actor added, “People don't treat her nicely, so she's able to manufacture and move things around at her will."

Whether or not Eloise will discover what her friend's been hiding from her all this time in Bridgerton season 2 or whether Penelope will be able to keep her alter-ego undetected for subsequent installments remains to be seen. In the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn, readers and characters were kept in suspense until Romancing Mister Bridgerton.

This is book 4 in the series and with Netflix’s Bridgerton already renewed for seasons 3 and 4, it’s thought that each one will follow the corresponding book. If this is the case, it could become more and more difficult to come back from all the lying for Penelope and Eloise after so long.

Why is Regé-Jean Page leaving 'Bridgerton' season 2?

Alas, Regé-Jean Page won't be returning to play the dashing Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton season 2, something we're still grappling with, truthfully.

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Oprah Winfrey interview, actress Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury) got our hopes up that parenthood for Simon and Daphne would mirror the royal couple.

Sadly, we now know that Regé-Jean Page is not returning, we are unlikely to find out much about the Duke and Duchess of Hastings’ married life, as was previously predicted.

The Instagram announcement of his departure, written à la gossip from Lady Whistledown herself, does suggest that actress Phoebe Dynevor and her character Daphne Bridgerton will return for Bridgerton season 2.

“Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer—more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear," it stated.

Who's in the 'Bridgerton' season 2 cast?

Netflix has announced some exciting additions to the already first-class cast, which includes the likes of Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Bridgerton, Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington and acting sensation Julie Andrews as the Bridgerton narrator, the mysterious Lady Whistledown.

Regarding cast additions, Netflix said—in true historical romance fashion— “Dear Readers, it seems we have a few new faces in the Ton. Do try your best to welcome them generously. I know I certainly will...”

Four new talents are joining the Bridgerton family tree for season two. Simone Ashley was cast as Bridgerton's Kate Sharma, who will be the love interest for Anthony. Now, Charithra Chandran has been cast to play Edwina Sharma, Kate’s younger sister, and Shelley Conn (from Liar), will play Mary Sharma, Kate’s mother.

Two new male characters have also been announced for Bridgerton season 2. Calam Lynch will play Theo Sharpe, and Rupert Young will play Jack.

The Bridgerton Love Triangle

Things are heating up in the next season—seriously, we can't wait—with the announcement of a steamy Bridgerton Love triangle. Attention turns to Anthony Bridgerton who finds himself in between the two sisters, Edwina and Kate Sharma (who were to believe will become Kate Bridgerton.)
