The full moon in May will bring rapid change, especially for these 4 signs
'It’s kind of like three full moons in one, so it’s extremely potent,' says astrologer Narayana Montúfar
Ch-ch-ch-changes. The May 2022 full moon—also called Flower Moon—is ready to turn things upside down.
While you were just getting used to Mercury retrograde 2022's second helping, the universe decided a little more action was in order. Thus, we have a full moon in passionate water sign, Scorpio.
"Scorpio deals a lot with emotions, how we deal with things in relationships. It’s kind of cleaning up how we relate to one another," says astrologer Narayana Montúfar, author of Moon Signs: Unlock Your Inner Luminary Power.
To top things off, the Flower Moon will mark the first total lunar eclipse of 2022. Phew! We're it's hard to keep up.
Be sure to light a few candles—a great gift for astrology fans—and take a breather. You're definitely going to want a little TLC.

Full moon May 2022: the basics
- When: Sunday, May 15 and Monday, May 16 (9pm PT, 12am ET)
"Eclipses are like supercharged full moons," Montúfar notes. "It’s kind of like three full moons in one, so it’s extremely potent and it’s about putting ourselves first."
She says the fixed signs—Taurus, Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius—are most likely to feel the changes during this lunar event, but unfortunately, they're members of the zodiac who are most resistant to anything new. Like it or not, it's all about embracing what's next.
"Trust that whatever is leaving is not in your path," she adds. "The more you resist, the scarier it will be. Eclipses are about surrendering because they’re going to do whatever it is they’re going to do."
During this celestial cycle, the sun will be in Taurus, which will give us a heightened sense of awareness around our bodies, and there will be a deep configuration with Saturn and the asteroid Vesta, which will likely force us to make a decision and push us out of our comfort zones.
Psst: do check out the rest of the 2022 lineup. If you've been known to ask "When is the next full moon?" we've got you covered.
What to expect during the Full moon May 2022
Yes, changes abound (check your astrological birth chart for specifics) but astrologer Nina Kahn also notes that this full moon and total lunar eclipse will mark an ending.
"It’s going to be a really emotional experience that’s full of release," she says. "It’s taking place in the water sign of Scorpio, which is totally amplifying our full moon feelings and it’s bringing everything up to the surface so we can purge what’s no longer serving us."
Sure we have an active calendar—May astrology events are a dime a dozen—but we can handle whatever we're faced with by listening to the universe. (Psst, now is not the time to manifest.)
How to prep for the full moon
There's really nothing you can do, other than embrace whatever is about to come your way.
"It’s pretty important that we respond from a place of devotion to ourselves around this time," Montúfar says. "Take time to rest and create awareness you give to others and yourself and how that has been out of balance."
Although this will mark the end of the spring eclipse season, we can expect similarities this fall when the moon goes at it again. Following this mid-May happening, those light-speed shifts detailed in your 2022 horoscope will be underway (particularly thanks to Uranus this summer).
No matter what celestial body decides to go a little haywire, trust that the universe has your back.
