Yes, there's a 'Polly Pocket' movie in the works, so prepare for some incoming nostalgia
First Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' and now a 'Polly Pocket' movie—looks like iconic dolls are having a moment!
We're drowning in pink and Barbie merch, but news of a Polly Pocket movie is here to give Mattel's leading lady a run for her money.
We kid—there's enough love and nostalgia to go around—but considering what a success Barbie has been, we welcome the idea of another childhood favorite being brought back to life. So, what's happening with the tiny toy and her big-screen debut? We'll tell you everything you need to know!
The 'Polly Pocket' movie: everything to know
The beloved toy rose to fame in the 1980s and mega-house Mattel acquired the product in 1998. Since then, Polly has joined the Barbie ranks and enjoyed spinoffs, books, animated kids' movies, and so forth. Now, millennial babies are going to get to relive yesteryear with a live-action Polly Pocket movie.
Who's starring in the 'Polly Pocket' movie?
Miss Emily Cooper herself, Lily Collins, will do the honors and bring the little lady to life.
"Little Lil, big news. As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pockets, it’s a real dream come true to announce this project! I am partnering with the most inspiring powerhouse team—Robbie Brenner, @lenadunham, @mattel and @mgmstudios— to reintroduce Polly to the world in a fun, modern way… bringing these tiny toys to the big screen," Collins revealed on Instagram.
(By the way, here's the scoop on Emily in Paris season 4, bébé—we know you're curious.)

Who is directing 'Polly Pocket'?
While Greta Gerwig brought Barbie to life and gave her story a feminist spin, Lena Dunham will do the honors of tackling Polly Pocket's next steps. Like Collins, she was also a huge fan growing up.
“Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me – Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel and MGM,” Dunham told Variety.
In late 2022, she had finished a second script and told The Hollywood Reporter that "we have a lot of fun with the idea of what happens when a small person encounters a big world.”
What will the 'Polly Pocket' movie be about?
Though specifics are under wraps at this time, we do know that the Polly Pocket movie will focus on the friendship between a young girl and a pocket-sized woman. We aren't sure about the angle the film will take just yet, but we predict that it'll be more suitable for the toys' older fanbase from the '80s and '90s, just like Margot Robbie's rendition of Barbie.
When will the 'Polly Pocket' movie hit theaters?
We're going to have to be patient, folks. The Polly Pocket movie isn't likely to begin production until late 2023, early 2024, and given all that's going on with the Writer's Strike, it's likely specifics are still up in the air at this time.
We'll have to bide our time and enjoy Barbie's existential meltdown in the meantime. But we have a feeling you'll be glad to spend time in Barbieland, regardless. It's a doll's world, and we're living in it!
