‘SHUT UP!’ The Princess Diaries 3 is officially happening—here’s everything we know so far!
It’s official, we’re returning to Genovia for Princess Diaries 3—but what’s the plot of the new Princess Diaries film and which cast members will return? Here's what we know!
The Princess Diaries 3 has been confirmed and we can't believe it—because when it comes to childhood films and iconic characters, the 00s teen movies really do reign supreme and The Princess Diaries movies were of course some of the best titles for bringing on the hardcore nostalgia. So here’s everything we know about the new Princess Diaries film!
We first caught wind of the films becoming a trilogy back in January 2019, when Anne Hathaway (aka Mia Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi—yes we had to use her full name) appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen and revealed that they were in talks for another film and that she and Julie Andrews were keen—but wanted to make sure everything was perfect.
She said: “We don't want to do it unless it's perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it . . . we're working on it.” And now, after nearly a three-year wait, Hollywood Reporter revealed that a script is in the works and that the film would a continuation—not a reboot! ‘Shut up!’—to quote Mia...
In the sequel to The Princess Diaries, we left Mia on the throne of the fictional kingdom, Genovia, with her grandmother, Queen Clarice (played by Julie Andrews) and her new beau Nicolas (Chris Pine) at her side. But where will we find her in the new Princess Diaries film and who from the original dreamy cast will be returning? Here’s everything we know so far, from the plot to a potential release date…
'The Princess Diaries 3' release date
At the moment, there is no confirmed date for the release of the new Princess Diaries film. However, we expect we'll still have to wait a while, as it has been confirmed that the team have only just started working on the script—which is being written by Supergirl screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji.
The film will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who worked on the first two movies—so we're hoping to see a similar thread!
Rumored cast of 'The Princess Diaries 3'
So far, no cast members have been confirmed, however, Anne Hathaway has previously said that she and Julie Andrews would be interested in reprising their roles.
That being said, there is still a big question mark surrounding the Sound Of Music icon, as she previously said in an interview with the Hollywood reporter: “I think it would be too late to do it now. Especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.” But fingers crossed they can make it work, it just wouldn’t be the same without at least a cameo of Queen Clarice!
Fans should also have their fingers crossed for a Chris Pine return, as we left him and Mia very loved up in the sequel. So purely for continuity purposes, of course, we need him in the film…pretty please?
Mandy Moore who played Lana, Mia’s high school bully also expressed interest in reprising her role. She told Drew Barrymore on her show: “My character was sort of the nemesis to Anne Hathaway's character in the first film, and she was so mean, I feel like maybe there's no place for her.”
Will Anne Hathaway be in 'The Princess Diaries 3'
It would hardly be Princess Diaries without the main character, so we can say with some certainty (however there's still no official confirmation) that Anne Hathaway will return, especially since she’s enjoying quite the renaissance of late.
Where are the 'Princess Diaries' cast now?
The original cast has gone on to see mega success, Anne herself has gone on to star in movies like The Devil Wears Prada, One Day and even won an Oscar for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables.
The Princess Diaries 2’s Chris Pine has also reached Hollywood mega-star status, starring as Captain Kirk in the Star Trek franchise and most recently in Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling—remember his cute red carpet moment with Florence Pugh?
Hector Elizondo, who played beloved bodyguard Joe has gone on to star in titles like Last Man Standing and even got nominated for a Golden Globe!
Mia’s BFF Lily Mascovitz (Heath Matarazzo) has also enjoyed success on the silver screen, starring in shows like The Estate and even cameoing in Grey’s Anatomy. Let’s hope we get to see her in The Princess Diaries 3!
Sandra Oh, who famously played Principle Gupta and had that iconic phone call about the Queen—which is a TikTok sound now—has also had a seriously impressive career, from her starring role in Grey’s Anatomy to appearing alongside Jodie Comer in Killing Eve.
What happened in the previous 'Princess Diaries' films?
In case you need a refresh on what's happened in the franchise so far, here's where Mia's story took her in the first two films...
The Princess Diaries
For those who don’t know, the 2001 gem that is The Princess Diaries follows the life of an awkward, frizzy-haired teen, Mia Thermopolis who is trying to navigate high school with her best friend Lily, while living with her mother (in the coolest fire-station conversion house ever) in San Franciso. And while being a high schooler is hard enough, she soon received news that turns her whole life upside down.
She discovers that she is not so ordinary after all—in fact, she’s a princess and next in line to the throne of the fictional country Genovia. And with the guidance of her grandmother, Queen Clarice, she must decide whether to reject her royal life or embrace it.
'The Princess Diaries 2': Royal Engagement
The 2004 sequel picks up where we left off, with Mia arriving in Genovia for the first time after deciding to embrace her royal destiny. However, as soon as she arrives she discovers that in order to be eligible for the throne, she must marry!
That’s where hunky Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine) comes in, but all is not what it seems with the mysterious suitor, as Mia soon finds out he too has a claim to the throne.
Despite his best effort to thwart her engagement to English aristocrat Andrew Jacoby, Nicholas falls for Mia—and denounces his claim to the throne but not before Mia takes a stand during her own wedding, to refuse the tradition forcing her to marry.
From what we know so far about the third installment it will be a continuation, not a reboot and as we saw Mia assume the throne, the new film will likely explore Mia’s life as Queen of Genovia.
