Billie Eilish used her Met Gala 2021 look to end the sale of fur at this major designer
It was more than just a modern-day Marilyn moment—that Billie Eilish Met Gala 2021 ensemble was fashion activism
She constantly surprises us with her style evolution, and that Billie Eilish Met Gala 2021 look was no exception.
The bleach-blonde crooner—who at 19 is the youngest co-chair in the event's history, co-chairing alongside fellow young style icons Amanda Gorman, Timothée Chalamet and Naomi Osaka—stepped out looking like a Gen Z Marilyn Monroe, draped in a blush-hued, Old Hollywood-inspired Oscar de la Renta gown with heaps of Cartier jewelry and a dramatic train that would make Rihanna proud.
But beyond being a stunning red-carpet moment, that Billie Eilish Oscar de la Renta look was also a powerful statement of animal activism.

According to The New York Times, the longtime vegan agreed to collaborate with the Oscar de la Renta team on the Met Gala look on the condition that the fashion house would cease the sales of all fur from the brand. (Note: Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the creative directors behind Oscar de la Renta, have not used fur in their runway shows for several years, but animal fur was still being sold in stores.)
In a statement to the Times, Eilish said it was "shocking that wearing fur isn’t completely outlawed at this point in 2021" and that she is "honored to have been a catalyst and to have been heard on this matter."
Social media applauded the move, saying it was inspiring and "iconic" that Eilish used her considerable fashion clout to make a real-deal, actionable change in the industry.
"Billie Eilish got an entire brand to stop using fur if they wanted her to wear their clothing.. do people realize how big that is," one Twitter user wrote.
See just a few of the props social media was sending Eilish's way below:

Billie Eilish VMA outfit: a style 180
Further proof of the singer's sheer style versatility, that nude tulle Met Gala confection was shockingly different than the red-carpet look that the "Ocean Eyes" crooner wore on Sunday, September 12 to the MTV Video Music Awards in Brooklyn.
For the award show, Eilish looked like total #fallgoals in an allover black look consisting of an oversized turtleneck knit, a mid-length skirt, and platform boots, finished with some David Yurman jewelry.
No matter what vibe Eilish is serving on any given day, we're here for it!
